On Saturday 3rd August, 2024, the University of Juba, hosted a young South Sudanese Female Author to launch her book, Title “Violence and Trauma” Healing South Sudanese Families and Communities.

In the opening remarks, Prof. Robert Mayom Deng, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba, warmly welcomed Dr. Akuch Kuol Anyieth to the University, noting that she was the first female from their community to obtain a PhD. He also acknowledged the presence of panelists Prof. Taban Lo Liyong and Prof. Mairi John Blackings, as well as Hon. Abdon Agaw, the Secretary General of the Government of South Sudan, and other distinguished guests, professors, lecturers, administrative staff, and students.

Dr. Akuch Kuol Anyieth is a distinguished scholar in Crime Justice and Legal studies, with over a decade of experience in Criminal Justice, Family violence, and Academia. Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Legal Studies from La Trobe University, a Master of Justice and Criminology from RMIT University, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law and Society from La Trobe University. She is also a qualified Trauma-Informed Coach and has completed a year-long Governance and Political Training at the University of Melbourne.

About the Book: “Violence and Trauma: Healing South Sudanese Families and Communities” explores the intricate linkages between violence and trauma in South Sudanese communities. Dr. Akuch draws on case studies and academic perspectives to illustrate the multidimensional and intergenerational trauma experienced by South Sudanese, including the impact of war-related violence, community violence, psychological and social injustices, and structural violence.

In the closing remarks, Prof. Deng also mentioned his recent election as the chairman of the board of the inter-University Association of East African community would only be relevant if his people competed well in the region and expressed his desire for South Sudan to compete effectively among the seven other countries, highlighting the importance of performing well while holding this position.
